The department was established in the year 1976 under University of Calcutta. There was a full time teacher. He taught up to 1988. But due to his sad demise department remain non - functional for long time. Introduction of foundation course in 1995 by TU department, the department again started with the help of a part time teacher. Since from the session 2003- 2004 students are admitted in the elective Hindi and from the session of 2009-10 students are taking admission in Hindi honours. Since then the department is running smoothly with the help of permanent teacher's.
