⊞ Brief Profile of the Department |
The Department of Sociology was established in the year 1985. A dynamic and vibrant intellectual environment, encompassing both teachers and students was diligently cultivated by the founding generations of the faculty. At present, the Department has four faculties, specialized in different branches of the discipline. Faculties have diverse institutional exposure. Initially, since 1985 admissions were being offered only for B.A Pass Course in Sociology . In addition, B.A Honours Course in Sociology was introduced in 2004. Currently, the intake capacity in B.A Honours Course is 40 and B.A Pass Course is 210. PROGRAM SPECIFIC OUTCOME: Sociology is a discipline which seeks to understand all aspects of human social behaviour, including the behaviour of individuals as well as the social dynamics of small groups, large organizations, communities, institutions and entire society. Sociologists are typically motivated both by desire to better understand the principles of social life and by the conviction that understanding these principles may aid in the formulation of enlightened and effective social policy. Sociology as a subject provides an intellectual background for students considering careers in the professions or business. A student of sociology should be able to develop: a) Critical Thinking: Students imbibe sociological knowledge and skills which enable them to think critically and imaginatively about society and social issues and problems. b) Sociological Understanding: Students are able to demonstrate sociological understandings of phenomena, for eg, how individual biographies are shaped by social structures, social institutions, cultural practices and multiple axes of differences and inequalities. c) Written and Oral Communication: Sociology provides students with the ability to formulate effective and convincing written and oral arguments. Students are able to get better understanding of real life situations and develop the ability to apply sociological concepts and theories to the real world and ultimately their everyday lives. d) Analytical Thinking: In Sociology, students learn the procedure of field survey and preparation of assignments which is an inseparable part of the discipline. Students are taught how to collect primary data for census as as his/her research topic and analyse the data to draw conclusions. So, qualitative and quantitative analytical skills are enhanced. In due course of reading sociology, the students develop a sensible observation power which is an important element to identify the research problems in field study. So, a perception about human society slowly grows up in the ends of young sociologists. Simultaneously, communication skills and social interaction power also develop as the students of sociology have to work beyond the classroom boundary at the time of field study activities. As a result, good communication skill develops while interacting with local people. e) Ethical and Social responsibility: Students have to learn about institutions, folkways, norms, values, mores, culture, social control, social inequality, population composition, policy, society and culture etc. All these help to install among the students of sociology a sense of ethical and social responsibility. Sociology though being one of the youngest social science discipline has a vast scope and provides wide range of professional and career opportunities. Sociology as a subject and discipline provides an intellectual background for students considering careers in business, social issues, public policy makers, government service, non- governmental organisations etc. This course lays foundation for further study in sociology, social work, rural development, social welfare and in other allied subjects. ⊞ Strength of the Department |
The Department has qualified, active, experienced and dedicated faculties. The faculty members have published and presented papers in International / National / State level, Journals and Seminars / Conferences. The Department regularly organizes National and State Level Seminars and Conferences in the Institute. The keen interests of faculty members of the department in conducting research of international repute also helps and motivates students to opt Sociology for the higher education. The regularly updated UG Syllabus for both Honours and Pass provides an opportunity to students to learn the contemporary and social problems as well as train them for various competitive exams at State and National levels. The Course for the Under Graduate is a blend of classroom teaching and field based learning to integrate the theoretical knowledge with the complicated social issues, which boosts student's interest in the discipline. Some of the modern methods that are adopted to improve the student's learning are Audio-Visual, Group Discussion, Flipped learning, regular internal assessment etc. Tutorial and remedial classes are also provided to the students for additional learning. Being located in the capital city of Tripura, the Department of Sociology fulfils the requirement of students from diverse geographical backgrounds. The ultimate aim of the Department is to provide a holistic approach with guidance and motivation to the students in order to make them bright citizens of the country. |

Departmental library could be set up for easy accessibility of books for the students and faculties. Additionally, the Department would like to provide modern facilities and opportunities to attract a wider range of students from every part of the State and Nation. |
